Dr. Heggen specializes in diagnostic radiology, breast imaging and biopsy at Iowa Radiology. He’s a native Iowan, born in Des Moines and raised in Northeast and Central Iowa along with his identical twin – who is also a radiologist. (If he doesn’t say “hi” when you see him out and about, you might be talking to his double!)
Bill Heggen began his undergraduate studies at Central College before transferring to Iowa State University and earning a B.S. in zoology. Although he had always been interested in science, Dr. Heggen didn’t decide until college to pursue a medical career. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He attended medical school on a U.S. Army scholarship, serving clerkships at Ft. Ord (Monterey Bay, California) and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu before completing his residency at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antionio, Texas. He served in the Army for 8 years, stationed at Ft. Sill (Oklahoma) and Ft. Lewis (Washington State).
Dr. Heggen enjoyed all of his rotations in medical school, including two at Iowa Methodist, but was most drawn to radiology because of its diversity. He welcomed the opportunity to interact and participate in all aspects of medicine – surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, and more. Once he completed his training and earned his certification from the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Heggen helped found Iowa Radiology, PC. He chose to set up his practice in Des Moines because he appreciates the sophisticated medical community and thriving culture in our area, where he finds friendly people and lots to do. For the last 15 years, Dr. Heggen has served on the State of Iowa Mammography Review Board.
Outside his practice, Dr. Heggen loves spending time with his wife and grown sons. Each now has his own family and, fortunately, both families live nearby. He is a proud new grandfather twice over. He enjoys golfing, reading, biking, and telling (bad) jokes. Although Dr. Heggen never became a zoologist, he and his wife Lynn have been involved with Animal Rescue League of Iowa for a number of years.
